On this day in history…
31 August 1997: Diana, Princess of Wales, dies.
Diana Spencer was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales and heir apparent of Queen Elizabeth II. Diana and Charles were married on 29 July 1981 in St. Paul’s Cathedral - an event that was televised worldwide. Diana later gave birth to two sons, Princes William and Harry. Although Diana was relatively popular worldwide and she garnered respect for her charitable work, her marriage to Prince Charles was an unhappy one. On 28 August 1996, the royal couple divorced. Diana retained her title, Princess of Wales, however, and her place in the Royal Family as mother to the second and (at the time) third in line to the throne. She also remained a popular celebrity. On 31 August 1997, Diana was fatally injured in a car crash in Paris. The crash also killed her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and the driver, Henri Paul. The accident was attributed to negligent driving and pursuing paparazzi. Diana’s funeral, though not a state funeral, was held at Westminster Abbey on 6 September. Like her wedding, the event was televised worldwide. Diana’s sudden and unexpected death caused a worldwide response - thousands attended the funeral ceremony, flowers, candles, and cards were left outside Kensington Palace (her home) for months, and the queen paid tribute to her in a live television broadcast.
